Chapter 6

Satisfied they now had proof Iran backed the failed terrorist plot, Jeff and George left the hospital. They also held the name of the person who planned the scheme. In the car, George turned to Jeff. “Sometimes, good comes from bad. Although the explosion caused Farshed death, he gave us the information we wanted.”

“Yes,” Jeff said. “But we need to locate Salem before the others do.”

They did not know he had left Panama. With no news about the destruction of the Golden Gate Bridge, Salem realised something had gone wrong. Therefore, he deemed it no longer safe to remain in the country. He knew whoever organised getting the containers on the ship would want him dead.

Like Farshed, whom he had never met, Salem also had a set of false papers, including a Brazilian passport. He had considered it expensive when he bought it, but now it was his means of escape.

When Jeff and George flashed money around at various customs posts with the offer of more, Salem’s whereabouts became known. An official at the airport recognised his photo, so he earned himself a hefty bonus. From him, Jeff learned Salem had flown to Brazil the day after Independence Day using a Brazilian passport in the name of Felipe Bosque.

Using this information, Jeff and George flew to Brazil and landed at the São Paulo-Congonhas Airport. They then took the advice of a taxi driver who drove them to the hotel he had recommended, The Estanplaza Paulista. When they pulled up, Jeff showed their driver a picture of Salem and mentioned Felipe’s wife and family had hired them. “They’d grown worried after Felipe’s disappearance and will pay for information as to where he is,” Jeff said. “Unfortunately, all they are aware of is he arrived here late evening on the fifth of July.”

At the mention of a reward, the driver licked his lips. “You will pay a reward for information on his whereabouts?”

“Yes, but Felipe is not to know,” Jeff said. “Otherwise, he might disappear somewhere else.”

Thanks to the dire situation in Brazil, Jeff knew the offer of a reward for information would do the trick. The man scratched his ear, and then his eyes lit up. “Okay. My cousin Garcia is a controller of the taxis at the airport. If I ask him, he might be able to locate the driver of the taxi he used.” He gave a sly smile. “Of course, he will want a share of any reward money.”

“Well, as long as he keeps things to himself, I’m sure we can reach an agreement on the finder’s fee.” Jeff’s grin widened. “But, of course, it would be up to you how much you give him.”

The man nodded. He would pay his cousin if he found the missing man but would keep most of the money for himself. Before driving off, the man said, “My name is Santos. If I find anything, I will call you at the hotel.”

With this agreed, Jeff and George checked in, then headed for Jeff’s room.
